June 28th marks the one year anniversary of the military coup in Honduras, as well as the spontaneous birth of a large and vibrant opposition to the resulting governments. It is a time to reflect on the meaning of democracy, and not only in Honduras.
For an excellent article on what the past 365 days has meant for Honduras and across Central America, read: 1 year later, THE COUP IS NOT OVER
The events of the last year have proven that the U.S. government often plays a determinative role in Central American politics. The U.S. followed contradictory policies before and after the coup d’etat, and is currently the No. 1 international ally of of the coup-stained Honduran government. By ignoring the myriad of ongoing human rights abuses in Honduras, the US is sending a clear message to the rest of Latin America.
Twenty-seven congressmen signed a letter to Senator Hillary Clinton last week
"…express our continuing concern regarding the grievous violations of human rights and the democratic order which commenced with the coup and continue to this day."
Today, join us in calling for the U.S. government to cease its unquestioning economic, military and diplomatic support for a government that allows powerful criminals to go unpunished while dissenters are persecuted.
Ask for US Asst. Secretary. of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, Michael Posner @ the State Department Switchboard 202-647-4000 and tell him the US must cease military cooperation with Honduras and withdraw recognition of the Lobo regime.
