PCASC Community Organizer Job Description

Executive Summary: Founded in 1979, the Portland Central America Solidarity Committee educates and mobilizes community members, workers, and students around struggles for human rights and social justice throughout the Americas. PCASC creates a space for those with anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, feminist, and anti-racist values to build community power.

Purpose: The PCASC Community Organizer advances the PCASC mission through recruiting new volunteers and members, developing the skills and leadership capacity of volunteers and members, and supporting the political work of sub-committees.

Part-time position at 20 hours per week
Reports to the Board of Directors
Compensation: $13,000/year
Benefits: 7 sick/vacation/holiday days per year (flexible schedule)

 

Responsibilities:

General:

  • Meet regularly with other staff member to coordinate shared duties, develop work -plans, and create accountability.

  • Monitor and support programmatic and strategic plans developed by the membership and board at bi-annual planning retreats.

  • Attend quarterly board meetings and report on progress of organizational goals.

  • Build relationships with allied organizations.

 

Organizing:

  • Lead community outreach and public presentations; recruit members, volunteers, supporters, and organizational partners to participate in events and organizing opportunities.

  • Ensure that new members are orientated to PCASC, are aware of opportunities to get involved, and are encouraged and supported through leadership development.

  • Support the coordination of monthly general membership meetings, including agenda development, outreach to committee members, and facilitation as necessary.

  • Engage with the political work of PCASC’s various subcommittees including ensuring leadership and political development opportunities for committee members.

  • Develop and coordinate program work through PCASC’s bi-annual program planning retreats.

  • Coordinate communications for the organization which includes managing social media, designing outreach materials, and creating strategic messaging

 

Strategically support Fundraising and Membership Coordinator by:

  • Assisting with solicitation of donations from unions and community supporters.

  • Supporting the growth and development of our grassroots fundraising program by incorporating fundraising into the organizing work.

  • Assisting with grant writing.

  • Assisting with the organizing of large fundraising events

 

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual- English/Spanish

  • Agreement with the values and goals of PCASC

  • Self-motivated, well-organized, with strong leadership qualities and the ability to work efficiently under minimal supervision

  • Strong written, verbal, and visual/graphic communication skills

  • Experience with grassroots community and political organizing

  • Experience working with communities of color and working class people

  • Training or experience with anti-racism and anti-oppression work

  • Extensive experience with membership/volunteer outreach, recruitment, and coordination

  • Basic computer literacy

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

 

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of social, political, and cultural issues of Latin America, immigrants’ rights, anti-corporate globalization work, prison abolition work, free trade agreements

  • A two-year commitment to the organization

  • Graphic design and communications experience
