Local activists have been instrumental in supporting on the ground projects including the building of a community radio station in a rural community fighting to protect their land from gold mining.

The peasant leader Maria Teresa Flores, who was missing since August 7, was found dead with signs of having been tortured and then executed with shots from a firearm.

Stop U.S. Support for Political Murders in Honduras Farmworkers Ramón Ulises Castellanos and Miguel Sauceda were murdered in the Atlántida region of Honduras on March 12, a day after being kidnapped. Wealthy landowners are recapturing land using paramilitary force with the Lobo administration's approval, land that the Zelaya government had redistributed to small farmers throughout the area who would actually work it.
