All of the countries of Latin America have been victims of its graduates. The SOA is a symbol of death, a symbol of terror. We have been gradually reducing our numbers of troops at the SOA, sending only five last year and none this year. We have now entered a new phase and we will NOT continue to send troops to the SOA. This is the least that we can do. We have been its victims.
I’m not saying that the US is going to launch a new Contra War, but neither is it going to release its historic stranglehold on Nicaragua willingly.
The governments of Ecuador, Venezuela, and Argentina denounced the events as they unfolded, and other neighboring countries (including Uruguay and Chile) have since recalled their ambassadors to Paraguay.
This green-washing of capitalism is not going to solve the global climate crisis, protect our communities from harm, or manage our common resources. Most importantly though, Rio+20 has made it clear that a Green Economy is not a transitional demand toward systemic environmental change.
In San Marcos Aviles, Chiapas, Mexico, people have stories markedly similar in basic plot to those I heard at Occupy Portland – if far more dire and often far more violent throughout the narrative – and they need listeners.
The FBI and ICE have a draft agreement that allows them to provide biometric information to a deportee’s country of origin upon repatriation, potentially putting people at risk of ethnic cleansing and discrimination upon returning to an oppressive or violent government.
